From a few stalls within the airconditioned main lobby of the neighborhood mall, quite a number have now joined the flair offering a variety of products.

Most of the items featured are all-natural and organic, from organic vegetables to organic home-made salad greens, organically prepared delicacies, and even non-dairy organic ice cream.

There are lots of all-natural sauces, an array of vinaigrettes, virgin coconut oils, wild honey, pro-biotics and several beverages.

You will be awed by uniquely prepared pastries, gourmet bread, an array of high dietary fibre, low fat and low cholesterol desserts, and peanut preparations.

There are also a line-up of Indian, Thai, French and Spanish food, home-made sardines, and meat preparations from hogs, fowls and cattle grown using only organic feeds.

Of course, there are always fresh fruits, herbal plants, decorative plants, flowers and some novelty items as therapeutic herbal pillows.

Springboard

The Sunday Market has became a springboard to quite a number of entrepreneurial ventures, prominent among them was Zubuchon that has evolved from stall-selling to restaurant operations.

It evolved into what is now a sought-after weekend enterprise to many venturesome Cebuanos.

Families in northern uptown Cebu City and western Mandaue City, and from even as far as Talisay City and Mactan frequent the fair to discover new items featured by the stall sellers.

BANILAD TOWN CENTRE

The teams they entered from Grade 3 to Grade 6 dominated the first round of the inter-school quiz bee at Banilad Town Centre (BTC) and will compete in the Finals on Sept. 24.

Both schools gained advantage to earn the distinction as overall champion as Bethany did last year when its Grade 5 and all high school teams won in the finals.

By the total points their teams earned over the weekend, Bethany edged Springdale by six points as the latter accumulated 100 points in the series supported by Memorx IQ Plus.

St. Theresa’s College (STC) and Acedemia del Christifidelis (AdC) also had three teams going into the finals, and two from Cebu Bradford School (CBS).

By ranking in terms of points scored, STC would be third with 81 points, and AdC at fourth place with 66 points.

Meanwhile, a team each from four other schools –  Cebu Eastern College (CEC), Childlink Learning Center (CLC), Marie Ernestine School (MES) and St. Paul Learning Center (SPLC) — also made it to the finals.

A team in the contest has three students of the same grade level.

Top teams

During the Saturday competition, two teams each from Bethany and Springdale and one from STC scored the most number of points from a highest possible score of 40.

The Grade 3 teams of Bethany and STC got 37 points each having answered all the questions in the difficult round, and missing out only to one question in the easy round earlier.

The Bethany Grade 3 team is composed of Stanley Clinton Co, Jeffrich Yap and Kenya Siao, while their STC counterpart has Sharmel Loree Segarra, Florence Mea Enlogada and Helena Ruth Lapurga.

The Bethany Grade 4 team composed of Carlynne Erica Mirhan, John Paul Thomas Uyheng and William Joshua King also dominated their peers, scoring 31 points.

Springdale’s Grade 5 and Grade 6 teams also led in their grade levels with the former scoring 29 points and the latter 16 points during the competition supported by Robinson’s Supermarket.

The Grade 5 team had Lance Cedric Tan, Justin Ryan Ng and Matthew Don Jose Garcia, while their Grade 6 counterpart in the all-made PAREF-run institution is composed of James Vincent Natera, Charles Nicholas Liu and Gerard William Tan.

Tie-breakers

Also during the competition, the SPLC Grade 4 team edged the STC team in the tie-breaker to grab the last ticket to the finals in the competition the Tutoring Club is supporting.

The STC Grade 6 team also had the same fate with the CBS team as both booted out the SPLC and MES teams in a 4-way tie for the last two slots for the finals.

Meanwhile, the eliminations for the secondary division will follow next Saturday, Sept. 17, still at the second floor lobby of the BTC main mall building.

While 11 schools competed in the Elementary division, 10 schools have registered teams to compete from first to fourth year.

Other than the schools named, Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) and Harvest Christian School International (HCSI) also entered teams to compete in the high school division.

The contest has Jiggy Junior of DyIO Y101-FM as Quiz Master.

Now in its second year, the “Knowledge Challenge” is pursued with the collaboration of the Department of Education (DepEd) that reviewed the quiz items and provided the judges.

The student champions in every level will receive golden BTC medals and some gifts from BTC tenants, while the school with the most number of winning teams will get a trophy as overall champion.

In case of a tie in the number of winning teams, the total points earned by their winning teams since the elimination round will serve as the tie breaker.

Quiz Master Jiggy Jr.

Twelve of them will challenge Bethany Christian School as last year’s overall champion for having five teams that finished champions out of the eight contest levels.

The eight levels are from Grade 3 in the Elementary level to 4th year in high school, disclosed Cerwin T. Eviota, the lead organizer and BTC’s marketing director.

Like last year, host Raymond Cerna, known as Jiggy Junior of DyIO Y101-FM, will again serve as Quiz Master.

Square-off

Eliminations in the Elementary level will be held on Sept. 10, while those in the Secondary years will be conducted on Sept. 17, both at the 2nd floor lobby of the main mall building.

Those who will survive the eliminations will square off in the Finals on Sept. 24. The contests start at 9:30AM.
